Scale in wealth management doesn’t happen without technology. The harder question is how you get it.
In this first episode of The Insider, Steve Gresham looks at the firms that have reached scale in the US and finds a common thread: none of them built everything themselves. At critical points in their growth, each one tried, hit a wall, and turned to a specialist who could get them there faster. Sometimes reluctantly.
Why wealth management technology is a build, rent or own decision
Steve’s argument is that working with specialists has moved from exception to default. There are too many capable people in wealth technology for a growing firm to justify building its whole stack alone. The risk worth avoiding is the opposite one: renting a platform where someone else holds your data and sets your roadmap.
His answer is simple. Don’t build it, but make sure you own it. Choose a provider with a genuine interest in your success, one that lets you own your data and your solutions while it does the building and running.
That’s the model Graphene is built on. Firms run their own branded, regulated platform on our infrastructure, owning their data, client relationships and economics, while we operate the infrastructure and the teams that keep it running.
