For years, wealth firms built their own wealth management platform from scratch. Steve Gresham was there for much of it and in this episode of The Insider he explains why.
Partly it was because nobody else could do it. Partly it was belief: firms were convinced their business was so different that no outside provider would understand it well enough to build for it.
Why building your own wealth management platform no longer adds up
That argument is long gone. Steve doubts anyone would make it out loud today. What remains is the wish for control and he calls that a false sense of control.
Real control comes from growing market share with clients who rely on you for solutions that work. Building your own technology pulls attention away from exactly that. A firm can’t position itself and connect with clients properly while it’s also tied up building infrastructure.
His conclusion: own your platform, own your solutions and leave the building to a specialist.
That’s how Graphene works (link to platform page). Firms run their own branded, regulated platform on our infrastructure, owning their data, client relationships and economics, while we build and operate the infrastructure underneath.
